The other option is attaching the photos to the email sent. This approach is convenient and does not require the extra click on a link. Note that there are free Web utilities available to reduce the size of photos before they are attached and sent. http://www.webresizer.com/ is one example - http://www.imageoptimizer.net/Pages/Home.aspx is another.  Or free graphic utilities you can download and use. 

Also, the advantage of posting pictures as a link (e.g., Picupine, Flicker etc.) is those attached photos do not add to the mailbox storage quota of the people who read the mail list mail by having the mails sent to their personal email accounts, as opposed to reading the mail bulletin board style on Google Groups.
