RE: Inner and Outer Seal failure- Rear end- 64 Plymouth



Hello,
The inner seals are installed with the spring lip IN to keep the 
differential lube out of the axle bearing.  

The axle bearings are grease packed tapered roller bearings similar to 
your front wheel bearings except much larger and pressed onto the axle.

The end seal also is installed with the spring lip in to keep the grease 
from the axle bearings away from the backing plate and brakes.

Normal fill on the differential as I know it is the way you filled it.

I would suspect that the seals were installed backwards or the lips were 
damaged when installing the axles.  Very easy to damage the seals 
installing axles.

My brother has a good story about the fist one he worked on, he was 
careful to clean all of the old grease out of the wheel bearings and put 
them in dry thinking they got lube from the differential - cost him a 
set of wheel bearings.
