Thanks Butch, As I have to make a place on the carb to hook up the kick down rod, I have not been driving it. That is the first thing I will do when I get back to it. I am assumeing you meant to make the rod adjustments at idle? Do you want the kickdown linkage to be maxed out when at full throttle, or adjusted so it kicks down at the engine speed that you want it to?......................NO

I'm going to echo what Gary said about hooking up the kickdown linkage. Pat Blais, one of our vendors on the home page, sends out a super-serious warning about this issue with his rebuilds. Not just hooking it up, but how to adjust it. He says the with the car in Neutral, adjust the linkage so there is a little pressure on the kickdown lever. You can feel the difference. You may have to go as much as 1/3rd of the way back on the adjuster. Mine didn't require that much pressure. All kinds of premature failures WILL occur if you run the car without a kickdown linkage. I have not learned this the hard way, but trust Pat's 35 (+) years of rebuilding these trannies. And yes, fill it up to the correct level asap!

You are making good progress! You best hook up that kickdown linkage right away: running without one is hazardous to the TorqeFlite's health. I'd do that and fill it to correct level of trans fluid and retest. It's less work to swap out to a different shifter than swap the whole trans. :)

Is the fuel filter new and filter in the gas tank new? I.e., no clogs in the fuel supply.

I got the old beast running better, after cleaning and re-gapping the
plugs, and tinkering with the Holly carb. I actually took it out on the
road for a test drive. After refilling the torque converter, I put in 2 1/2
qt. of tranny oil and it still is low on trans fluid. ( I ran out of more)
It still does not run quite right. It its hard to tune with open headers and
1000 idle rpm cam. The tranny shifting is erratic I don;t know if it is
because of being low on TF or because I dont have the shift down linkage
hooked up. I know I don't like the B&M ratchet shifter! I have located a 65
T flite cable shift tranny locally and it would have the slip yoke output
shaft. . The Holly accelerator pump barely dribbles in some gas , so I will have to experiment with some different acc. pump cams to get a better shot.
