Re: Carter AFB replacement?

Eastwood makes a spray-on carb paint that you can 'cover' the shiny with aluminum color if you wish.

As for the hard starting, My AFB has similar evap issue, but its usually crank it for 30 seconds on startup if its been sitting a few days, 3 to 5 pumps of the gas petal, and it fires right up. My son's volare is more like a 90 second crank prior to bowl filling up.

I know an electric fuel pump vs the Mechanical Carter Fuel Pump I have would be the solution. Turn on Key, float bowls fill up, ready to start.

Modern replacement will still have evap issues. Holleys less so, because bowls are bigger. I had a Holley Street Avenger 770 on a 440 that ran like a monster. Was very impressed with the carb right out of the box. Ran 14.05 in a 4000 lb car in Denver prior to dialing the carb in.

Steve, I don't think they come in that 'dull' finish. They have the
bright and the super bright :-) How about painting it with the
stainless steel paint I used on the head display and my hood scoop? That
paint is super expensive, $22 a can, but it is the best ever and goes a
long way. It is used on outdoor transformers, etc, by the utility
companies. I don't think we can just get the stuff but I have a contact
I can get it from. Legally !!! I have a little bit left in the can I
used.

BTW your 331 hemi-head will be back on April 20th along with my car.

Jim: Good choice on the Edelbrock. They are very simple, start better
than
Holleys or Carters. Don

I currently have a rebuilt 1965 Carter AFB 4 barrel on my 63 Polara
500 with a 383. I like being close to period correct but I'm getting
tired of the starting difficulties. If the car has been sitting for a
week, it takes a while of turning the starter to start up. We've had
discussion on the board before and I think the consensus was the old
Carter AFB's were prone to evaporation and it takes some cranking to
refuel it. FYI, I have the standard stock style mechanical fuel pump.

I'm thinking strongly about replacing it with a modern 4 barrel. Any
opinions on a good compromise between driveability and a little power?
I was thinking Edelbrock Performer 600 CFM.

I currently have the old style choke with the thermostat sitting in
the recess on the intake manifold. Any opinions on getting a new carb
with electric vs. manual choke? Pros and Cons?

As always, thanks.
