RE: off topic 340 engine

Even though I've owned a Hemi the 340 is my favorite Mopar engine. In
September of 1967 I bought a brand new 68 Dart GTS 340 and I've been a 340
fan ever since. As with most HP engines back then they were unrated by the
factory for horsepower because of insurance. Every 340 dyno test I've read
said they were putting out close to 340 HP not 275. Because of the light
weight putting them an A body makes for a great handling car. IMHO Putting a
big block in an A body makes them nose heavy. Plus I've never seen a 383 in
an A body that will outperform a 340. Besides the Dart I've owned a 69
Barracuda Formula S convert, and a 71 Challenger convert both with 340's.
Plus I've had transplanted 340's in a 36 Dodge coupe and a 73 Dart swinger.
My current rides is a 36 Plymouth 2dr touring sedan with a 68 Formula S 340.
I've never met a 340 I didn't like. LOL An A-100 with a 340 sounds like a
cool ride. Tell your friend congratulations on a great find.
Dan

Subject: off topic 340 engine

A friend called me and said he had bought an A100 Dodge from the early
60's It was origionally a 273 V8 but now has a 340. He was asking me about

this engine. I know a little bit about some of them , but figgered someone
here would know a lot more. I think they are all a higher performance
engine. What years were they in production and what were the various
horsepower ratings . Basically how were they equipped to achieve their stock

horsepower? Thanks for any info........................MO
