Not hearing any bells or whistles here,,,,,,,,,,  If the car is  already on 
jack stands all  you need to do is turn one of the wheels if the  other 
wheel turns the same direction it is a posi if it turns the opposite it is  
open,,,,,,,,,,,,  another test if the car will run is to apply light  pressure 
on the brakes, and then apply enough gas as to cause the wheels to  turn, if 
only one wheel turns it is open, both will turn if  it is a  posi.   
somewhere I have a short movie made by the United States  Army  that explains rear 
ends, if I can find it I will post a link to  it,,,,,,,
