727 problems

I took my car out for a cruise last sunday. After driving for 40 miles
or so I was pulling out onto the highway and shifted up through the
gears shifting from 2nd to 3rd at a fairly low rpm. I thought it had
shifted normally but after driving down the road for a mile or so it
dropped into neutral and I had to punch the 2nd gear button and then the
3rd gear button to get it to shift back into high gear. When it dropped
into neutral it also produced a cloud of smoke. The trans temp had also
jumped up to @ 200 degrees.
After several miles the temp dropped back to normal, @ 160 degrees. It
drove and shifted normally the rest of the way home. Today when I drove
it over to the Air and Space Museum it would not shift into 2nd. I had
to shift from 1st directly to 3rd. I checked the fluid level and it was
a pint low, but topping it up made no difference.
Am I going to be pulling the transmission out next spring when I bring
it back home? What do you guys think?
It has a manual, reverse shift pattern valve body.
