Alcohol of any kind will swell your rubber parts and shorten there life.

Yes, you can.
It's not a good idea, but it can be done.
Federal law requires that ALL brake fluids be fully miscible to be DOT
approved.
The best way to switch to DOT 5 is to flush the lines with denatured alcohol
This will clean them out and remove any traces of water in the lines. Do
the same with your new calipers or wheel cylinders then fill and bleed.

Just be sure that you flush the system really good before installing dot 5.
Can't mix them.

I have had the same experience with Dot 5 silicone brake fluid. I was told
not
to use it on my last car build. I did it anyway because of good luck I have
had
with it. I solves all my brake fluid related issues just as Steve mentioned.

On a side note. My son raced Gokarts nationally for ten years. We had all
kinds of corrosion, rust and hydroscopic problems with brand new racing
gokarts. We started changing out the brake fluid to Dot 5 when we got the
Gokarts new. It solved all of our brake problems.

This topic always seems to stir debate. In my 56 Chrysler, I put all new M/C
wheel cylinders and all lines . Here is why I like DOT 5 silicone: no
corrosion
anywhere. - will not hurt paint, my M/C has no sighn of rust and the paint
is
like new on it after 6 years--firewall around it has no rust, unlike it did
have
from brake fluid corrosion also corroded on my 64 odge. --No sighn of
swollen
rubber parts anywhere. Same testimony from others that have done the same as
I.
. I just can't buy the water separation theory. If the brake lines and wheel
cylinders are completly bled of air, There is no room for condensation to
form
and so no water tn the silicone. No water-no rust. From my first hand
experience, I think I will use DOT 5 in my 64 Dodge. Just my 2 cents worth
