Agree, but that's what the manual specs were  "back in the day" that you inquired about. 

Lubrication technology is much improved now in a lot of ways, though. 

You may want to try something like Synchromax <http://www.royalpurple.com/manual-transmission-fluid.html> and see what happens. Or call their tech line and ask what fluid they suggest you use.
