The last time I looked into this, the general rule was to use a fluid that was backwards compatible. That is, if the manufacturer called for Dextron 3 you should not use Dextron 2, but if they called for Dextron 2 you could use Dextron 3 or any newer version. Type F is popular with performance applications because it has more friction components in it. Synthetic is a modern fluid that works well and is a sound choice in a fresh rebuild.
