RE: 318 Oil Pan Gasket Install



John, I just did replace the oil pan gasket on my 64 Plymouth 383. I had a
real problem with the bolts up under the K frame. The problem for me was
that there was not enough distance between the pan and the K frame to get a
socket on the bolt heads. I tried both 3/8" drive and 1/4" drive sockets,
but both were too long, once married up to the ratchet. Nor could I get a
box end on the bolt heads because of the lip on the oil pan. Maybe an offset
box end would have worked, but I don't have any. Fortunately, my son came by
and offered up a solution that worked for me. He has a set of Kobalt sockets
and ratchet. The socket in these things actually recesses into the ratchet
rather than protruding from the end of the ratchet, which got me at least
another 3/4" clearance. I was able to get the front bolts out using this set
up. Lowes handles this brand of tools if you find yourself in the same
situation. I could not torque the bolts when I put them back in, but I was
using a 1/4 inch ratchet with a 6" handle, so feel pretty good that I did
not over-torque any bolts. 

I did this while I had the center link off the car, as I was rebuilding the
front end. Suggest you do the same. One less thing to get in your way.

the oil pan is not that hard too replace the gasket if it is up in the air
may have too raise the motor up a bit  ,,but if you can replace the steering
and suspension you can do  the oil leak
