Re: Need Help Identifying 273 Cam

Because the line on the Journal is small, Jim thought I could have a machine shop polish any raised edges off and put it back in. I'm tempted to try. I guest worse case, I replace 2 sets of cam bearings, and possibly the rod/main bearings a second time.

I plan to refresh the engine. Not sure on rings yet, but mains and Rods dont have a lot of wear, but do have some water mark/slight pitting from condensation from the car sitting for so long in the barn. Thats why the cam started to squeal, because the bearings werent 100% smooth anymore.

Sometimes a phone call is the only way to get through to some companies. Melling may act that way.
Hopefully Jim at Racer Brown can help too.

Thanks,

I tried that three days ago, but to no response as of yet. Jim said he would be getting an old Melling Book sometime this week, I was going to call him tomorrow to see if it had the Cam in it. If not, he said he can duplicate the cam for me if I send it to him.

I'll post what I find. Thanks for the response. Was curious if the e-mail made it out.

From: Tom Watters With the help of Jim at Racer Brown, I at least know it is a Melling Cam. Anyone have an old Melling book with the Cam Spec's?

Tom Watters wrote:
Other than the stampings on the end SPD14 and J127, the only other markings on the Cam are casting marks.

Inside the rear journal 13 on one side, 16 on the other.

Inside the distributor Gear Ring, V64 on one side, 15 on the other.

The 6's might be 8's they are a little difficult to be sure they are 6's.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
