383 Cam Selection Question



I am going to be changing the cam in my 383 this winter.  The last time 
I had the intake off I checked the lifters and it looks like a couple 
may not be rotating well.  They are starting to get a wear pattern on 
them.

My current cam is about .477 to .48 lift by dial indicator.  I have no 
idea what brand the cam is or the exact spec, it was in the engine when 
I bought it.  The 383 is near stock, it has been balanced and has had 
minor head work done.  I have an Eddie dual plane manifold with a Holley 
750. I will be running 3.55 gears with a 4-speed.

Any thoughts on how much cam I can use and still have a fun driveable 
car with reasonable fuel economy?

Also any recommendations on cam grinder would be appreciated.  I have 
heard good things about Racer Brown.  I talked to Comp Cam and they 
suggested I stay with something near what I have such as their
