i had the same problem after rebuilding my 383.  my cousin told me about the

When I originally primed my BB I discovered I had the drill going the wrong 
way. When I got it right it didn't take long for the drill to really start 
to labor and I saw oil coming up through the rocker arms. If not,I'd follow 
the great advice you're getting here. Good luck!
