Hi Bill,
That is an aftermarket filter that was usually used by transmission rebuilding shops to trap any debris that could be in the cooler and lines after a rebuild of a transmission. There is a number stamped on the rail by the shift linkage that will give you the information that you need. If you let me know the number, I can identify the year for you.

I ended up going down and picking up this trans that Gary posted (link
doesn't work now), but I have a question...

There is what appears to be an inline trans filter in one of the
cooling lines...looks like a HUGE metal fuel filter ~6" long and 3-4"
across. Does this lend a hint to what year this trans is?
