I think if you hold the lower steering shaft with one hand, the coupler housing with your other hand, then attempt to twist one side against the other, you'll get an indication of excess play.Since you rebuilt the entire front end except the steering box and coupler, then the coupler is the least expensive item to restore. With the engine off (its power steering)you can move the steering wheel a couple of inches in both direction, with no resistance/without moving the tires at all.
