Just a theory--- if there was some air space or vacume space in a coil to allow for heat expansoion of the oil inside, and the coil was upside down, It would leave the gap at the top(bottom of the coil) With the coil on its side the gap would be thinner because it is longer.. It is always amazing what the "old timers" can come up with. However, I have a question. If that is true always, why, I wonder, would the factory mount them laying down for the V8?
