I just completed an extensive DRY air system, running big pipes , moisture drain valves, moisture trap , etc. The pipes run way up into the rafters of the barn and then back down. I did it on the cheap as the pipe was laying around and i sweet talked the guy at HomeDepot into threading it on their machine since it was the 4th of July, and they were slow, so he had time. I just told him I would buy every thing else i needed for the project from them. All told it cost me about 100 bucks in elbows, couplers, reducers etc. already had the moisture trap and draincocks though. The point of this is , that I am gonna do my first paint job in about 15 years. just cant afford the 5000 dollar two year paint jobs. screw it , heard too many horror stories. My buddies '76 camaro has been in a "shop" for about 18 months now , with hardly any progress. Shot a few cars with acrylic enamel with my dad when younger, the last was a VW beetle in about 1993. The looked OK. I bet I could do better now. I am gonna fashion a make shift booth in the barn here. I paint houses for a living so I am comfortable with a spray gun, shooting oil enamels and lacquers for interior work. and lots of exteriors in acrylic. so I feel I have the basics of how to keep the gun moving perpendicular and even to the work. the auto finishes are a little thinner when mixed with reducer, but not much more than we mix our Benjamin Moore alkyd enamels, they are pretty runny after dumping a bunch of thinner and conditioner in them. runs right off the stick. so we'll see how it all turns out. I am gonna go with a mid range ( 350 dollar) HVLP gun. The shop had a SATA 3000 HVLP gun for 789.00 bucks, geez. for primer guns I am just gonna use some old siphon guns I have picked up at various garage sales at abou 5.00 each. clean em up, and use em again for primer. who cares about the primer, youre gonna sand most of it back off anyway. cant decide on acrylic enamel or the base/clear approach. still thinking about that.
