Re: 452 Heads Question

in the 70's, I don't know how long Ma Mopar produced them, at any rate, we love them for a stock head. Another good head that might have hardened seats is the 346 castings, I can't honestly remember. Some years ago a buddy bought a set of 346's that were ported by the Rettig Brothers in California and they were really impressive. The car in question was rather quick for the time, keep in mind that back in this era I speak of there were no aftermarket offerings such as we have today. I remember spending untold hours epoxying up 906 and 452 castings after some radical porting, surprisingly enough the 452 seemed to have better core strength and by that I mean they would last longer and not crack as fast as the same version of 906's. I expect all of the engineers are probably going to rip me for this but I am merely stating the facts as they were for us. Since I am on a roll one of the better intakes we have found for both street and strip cars is the Holley Street Dominator intake with a little porting. I have around here somewhere some flow numbers of a test I did. One night when I worked for the late John Lingenfelter I decided to flow my own 440 intakes to see where they stood, the test consisted of a stock 67 cast iron, a Edelbrock TM-7, a Weiand 7512 and a Holley Street Dominator. As you can imagine the stock cast iron was horrible, the surprising outcome of the test was the TM-7 was nothing to get excited about and the Holley Street dominator wasn't too far off of the race bred 7512. Oh My, aren't I just a little chatty tonight!
