Re: Rear main seal install RB

Again I apologize for my miss spelling. I am without excuse and it is funny.
The corTeco seal comes with a silicon rubber side seal set. I slurp them will with ultra copper so they slide in plus I put a smear of it on the bottom of the seal holder just so nothing will leak by in case the mating isnt perfect. It works for me. Save for a couple of defective seals from felpro when they changed suppliers a few yaers back I have not had any complaints . It was at that time i switched to the Corteco brand. The defective felpros had switched to a black harder side seal kit from the old white oil sensitive seal and would not swell tight like the old ones. I set them in a block here after the prescribed preesoak once overnight to see and they were actually still loose the next morning so that is when i switsched. Ah chevy guys! I well remember a Chevy guy phoning here several times cursing mopars and rear main seal . When i went to see he had done the same , no side seals just goop RTV. Ya jus cant trust guys who like Russian engines in French cars I always say! And yes the 383 holder is the same.
Don

Thanks for the input Don
So you are saying to use the factory rear cap with a original style rear main seal kit.Should use any kind of sealer on the install? I dont have the original 440 rear cap but I do have one from a 383,are they the same?
Like I said I do not want to do this again(lol).
The shop that did the motor,?first use the factory cap but used rtv instead of side seals, that leaked 20min after first start up,took the engine out and brought back to him,he said I always use rtv and never had a problem(GM lover),this time he put in MP billet rear cap in and it did make it leak a lot less, but after driving this past summer it showed signs of leaking again. So it is my time to do it,I just want to do it correctly.

Take the freaky fancy rear main seal and give it to someone you dont like. Use a normal one. Dress the deal holder a bit on the bottom with a file . Not much , just clean it up. It makes the seal just a tiny bit tighter. I like the cordeco seal best. The funnny stuff will work should you be lucky enought to get it installed but the factory style works perfectly I have found. I used some goofy thing my pal brought inhis engine. Spent half a day installing it. When last freshened the engine he said "you arent going to need a new seal for the billet one are you.?" I said" nope cause I aint using one again." (That bandito! How did he know?) My rule in old age is if it comes in a blister pack then it is probably no good.?
Grumpy old Don?
