recoil

hi, the front & back bolts that hold the exhaust manifold on are spinning 
loose. im thinking the threads in the block have rusted away. i went & 
bought a recoil set & am wondering how you stop the swarf from entering the 
water jacket? or if i drain the block thoroughly afterwards would this be 
ok? its on a 318LA thanks, richard [oz]
