I'd find it hard to believe it froze up that fast. You should be able to 
get a feel from the handles whether there's some tension on the 
mechanism when you pull the handle or push the button. As I recall I had 
a door on mine that I couldn't open and the rod inside had popped 
off/broke, I don't remember which but it was apart. Might have been the 
retainer broke. Anyway I had to pull the panel to find this out and get 
it opened and fixed.
