I always thought that was the case, but I went to two banks and was told no. They both told me it takes five business days before they can for a fact clear the check. During those five days, the person who drew the check can kill it a number of ways. I don't even see the advantage a bank check would have over a personal check, for that matter. One bank manager told me they also need that time to verify the check's even real! She said they average two per month that are forgeries, and more than that in the summer. The bank froze the amount of the cheque in my account for 28 banking days. As as banking days are Monday to Friday, except holidays, I had those funds on hold for over 5 weeks. I think cheques from outside of North America are held even longer. ---- Please address private mail -- mail of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
