Re: Early 8 3/4 Rear Axles

Hi All,

DId the very same thing here.
my SG axles (in 742 case had trashed threads). I found a rear ('63, non SG) i ground just a bit off of the tips (it took a while) but worked out fine.
been running 3 seasons now.

Marcus,

I did this conversion 2 years ago on my '63 Fury. I changed the 741 2:76
non-SG unit to a 742 3:55 SG unit.

Axle 2070573 - 741 case w/o SG 30 1/2"
Axle 2404050 - 742 case SG 30 7'16"

You need to shorten the 30 1/2" axle 1/16" by machining or grinding.
Careful marking and grinding took 1/2 hour each axle. When you shorten
the axle it allows you to obtain .013 to .023 inch axle shaft end play.
I obtained .018 inch with the original shim packs.
