Door Glass

I have a scratched passenger door glass on my 1965 Satellite. I want to change this glass and my glassman tells me it must be tempered glass.  His reasoning is;  the window is so big and un-supported, not like a post car, laminated glass will not work.  He says it will shatter after a few door closings. Any experience out there?  Ollie
