Well I checked both my 63 and 64 Plymouth FSM and this gets even more
confusing. It seems like manual & automatic and V8 and 6 cyl. trannys
use a different number of teeth for the speedo gear. I'm not sure what
the difference is between the manual and automatic but the 6 cyl. tranny
has 7 teeth on the output shaft and the 8 cyl. tranny has 8 teeth on the
output shaft. It shows the number of teeth needed with a 700 x 14 tire
which is 26.80" in diam. (sound familar Rich?) and a 3.91 rear end
(manual V8 tranny) as a 19 tooth dark blue but... there's also a sub
note that says with this combo to use a .9058:1 ratio adaptor. (Mopar
made ratio adaptors???????) It shows a 21 tooth gray for the 3.55 rear
end. I guess the 21 tooth is as close as your going to get unless you
can find one of those ratio adaptors or use a slightly taller tire.
This sure is a lot more confusing than the 66 and up gears which I'm
familar with. I discoverd years ago that if you have a stock height tire
of about 27" that the speedo gear teeth (66 and up) will match the first
2 numbers of the rear end ratio. For example a 3.23 uses a 32 tooth gear
and a 3.91 uses a 39 tooth gear ect. If you have smaller dia. tires you
need more teeth and if you have taller dia. tires you need less teeth.
That last statement should be true for the 65 and older gears too.
