1. The #1 piston is always at the top when the timing marks are aligned. You
need to make sure it is on the compression stroke (both valves on #1 closed)
and at the top of the cylinder. You can do this by holding your finger
firmly over the plug hole and slowly turning the engine (or pulsing the
starter). When you feel the puff too powerful to keep your finger over the
plug hole, line up the timing marks and you should be good.
2. The distributor rotor should then be pointing at the #1 plug wire. There
is no official "o'clock" position. It should point at the first plug wire in
the firing order (#1).
3. If your engine is a big block (B/RB), the distributor turns counter
clockwise. If it's a small block or poly (A/LA), it turns clockwise. The
firing order and cylinder locations are the same, just opposite distributor
rotation.

Subject: Quick ignition help...
This is just a general question but maybe someone knows from
experience.....
Im trying to reset my ignition system back after removing the distributor
(long story)....
Where does the rotor point, when the car is set at TDC on the #1
cylinder? Should it be approx 11o'clock or 5 o'clock? I know this isnt
exactly precise.. Im just using it to double check myself.
I aligned the timing mark, and checked to see the piston is all the way
up on Cylinder 1.. and the rotor points to 11 o'clock... does this sound
right?
Thanks
...also.. the 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 wiring sequence is counter clockwise,
correct? (I second guess everything!)
