I mentioned a while ago that once we'd got our 63 back on the road, the ride quality was hampered by vibrations/noise coming into the cabin. The noise seemed to be top end engine noise, which may be normal for the 426, but what we need to concentrate on fixing is the vibrations we get through the car from about 3000rpm, cos it gets kinda worrying at 'highway' (as you'd say over there) speeds, and is delaying any plans to take it up the 1/4. We had the propshaft (driveshaft?) rebalanced just before the engine went back in, so it should be ok, but we're going to get it checked by someone else, just in case it wasnt done right. Another guy in our club with a 72 Charger recently had a similar problem which he has had fixed by a local garage (US specialist). He/they said one thing that was causing his vibration was his exhaust system was clamped up too firm to the body, and was transmitting the engine's vibrations thru to the car. I think he just had steel hangers so has now had the usual rubber insulators fitted to absorb some of the resonance. They also checked his axle end-float which needed shimming. Along with replacing some shot u.j.'s, the work done has made the car drive better than ever. Whilst our uj's should be ok (replaced when the prop was balanced), I'm wondering if the exhaust & end-float factors could be contributing to our problems. Because our engine was so bad before the rebuild, we didnt really have it much over 3000rpm so dont recall as much vibration. Just before the car came off the road for the engine work, we fitted new Moser axle shafts (1 of our originals had a bent flange), so am wondering if we may have end-float issues too. Also, I noticed the other day that our exh (full MW system) has got rubber mounts but it is fixed so firm (the rubber parts are so short there's no room for them to flex) that the pipes cannot be moved by hand at all. Any idea whether these could be contributing to our probs? Thanks in advance.....
