I built a V8 S-10 a few years ago and installed a shift kit and a converter lockup controller, neither was hard to do, although the lockup harness instructions sucked. The shif kit (for a GM anyway) is mainly a new programming plate, removing some springs and installing bushings in their place. Mine was a 2 stage, so of course installed the stiffest bushings. It shifted so hard it jerked my neck, and for a daily driver at 6am, it was a liitle too much, so I removed one of the bushings and softened it a little. I think if you have decent mechanical skills you can probably handle it, but I've never done a Mopar tranny, so I'm not sure how they differ. Good luck.
