That is what I dod with the cranks when they have surface rust, and have had no problems.

I wouldn't worry about that Neil. I once used some 2000 wet/dry sandpaper
soaked in WD40 to clean one up that had anti freeze in the oil. Worked ok. A
scotch brite pad cut to the journal width might be better. Tread lightly..
