I am tempted to say that, during the '60's and '70's,  30 was the age we 
now-aged "semi-hippies" were no longer to be trusted at.

Regardless, perhaps your nephew's situation is an opportunity to use the 
"risingconcepts.com/frapper/" members mapping website to recognize places where 
you could know ahead of time there is a person to help in case of breakdown.   
This would of course need to be voluntary and might only be limited to a phone 
contact to get advise where best shop for repairs at......I would be tempted 
to get him a AAA card before such a trip so that he would at least be towed to 
a shop should the worst occur.

Anyway, if SoCal area is the area of trouble, let me know & I will work with 
you to help out.
