The OD trans discussion is great. The idea of a low first gear gearset 
for the 727 (2.77 ratio) to replace the stock 2.45 ratio, and then 
using a more highway friendly rear ratio was fantastic until I did the 
math. In order to get the same overall first gear ratio as the stock 
trans with my 4.10 rear gear, the 2.77 first gearset would need 3.63 
rear end ratio. Not friendly enough on the highway. So far, the 700 R4 
seems to be the ticket.

By the way, in the old days, a lot of folks put GM 12 bolt rear ends in 
as they had less parasitic losses which meant more useable HP.

You make a great point about the old days and originality with the
Get r dun attitude. Some times combos that guys put together because
that is the parts they had laying around, or could get to fit into their
budget
are just cool, because they are different. Our engineering firm works 
with
many clients putting together kit cars, and new concepts. Yesterday I 
was
working with a group making a 69 Camaro out of a 2002 Camaro. Of course
it has the new crate motor, big wheels etc. They are going to offer it 
as
a kit. They think it is really cool. I just think it is another cookie
cutter kit.
I would rather see anything different. But that is just my taste. I 
like the

guys with the get r dun attitude and odd ball combos. I guess that is 
why
I look forward to the Salt Flats every year. I am always blown away 
with
some of the combos you see there each year.

By the way I was not dumping on the 700R4, just offering another option.

the 700R4 is no slouch either,  it was used in GN's and GNX's, all 13 
sec
cars.  the 4L6E is a continuation of the 700R4.

Chrysler did a great job with the A727 & A904, but did a poor job 
designing
the overdrive versions (the A500 and A518)  the OD units failed a good 
bit.


back in the early days of hotrodding, putting a Buick engine in a 
Chevy, or
an  Olds in a Ford was  perfectly acceptable if it "got-r-dun".  
nowadays
the hobby has moved so much in the direction purist thought, that a GM
tranny in a mopar is outrageous behavior.
If it works, isn't there some "ain't it cool" factor to give the guy?

I have a Super Stock magazine from about 68 or so with a R023 Hemi car
feature. the car was being campaigned in SS with a GM 12 bolt rearend.
Being that it probably was original racer that did the modification,  
how
many of you, if in charge of restoring it to its original heyday of 
racing
trim, would install a Dana or a 8-3/4 in place of the 12 bolt rear end? 
how
many of you would opt of the period originality of the GM rear?  (BTW: 
I'm
not actually asking for a vote, rather opinions and thoughts on the
subject...)
