The idea behind the 700R4 is basically financial. My '89 Suburban tow vehicle (bought new) has worked flawlessly for 200,000 miles, but is getting pretty rusty and the 350 is smoking pretty badly on start up. Because it is 17 years old, it's not worth anything for trade in, and thought it might be a "donor" candidate, but if there is doubt that it will hold up behind my very healthy stroked big block, maybe should go back to the drawing board.

All I can tell you about the 700R4 is that it couldn't hold up in my dad's suburban behind a 350. Everything was fine until you tried to tow with it. I wouldn't trust a 700R4 in my lawnmower. A powerglide is a different story as they are a very popular drag racing transmission. I'd rather have a Powerflite. Oh wait, I do.

Well, I'm guessing the price. The Mopar A518 needs an adapter to mount it to the big block. This gets real expensive, for the trans plus adapter. Adding an aftermarket O.D., such as a Gear Vendors, is close to $3,000. I'm assuming a GM O.D. trans is quite a bit cheaper, even after purchasing the Mopar adapter for it.
The A727 is, however, the best automobile automatic transmission ever, in my opinion. Who knows if a GM O.D. trans can take the abuse of a stout 440.
