I gotta think the noise is indicating the belt slipping as in one of the 
pulleys hanging up or at least causing much resistance aka heat. The 
waterpump has to be a prime suspect. When you replaced the idler was 
there a new shaft that came with it or does it reside on an existing 
shaft? Could be this gets hot and swells causing the friction there. At 
least I'm sure it's not the muffler:)
