Have you checked your manual regarding this.  My 1 h.p. air compressor 
says not to use an extension cord.  I tried it once just to see what 
would happen.  It just sat there and hummed.  If the manual doesn't 
address it I would consult an elctrician.  I know we have a resident 
elctrcian on this list.
