You're right in thinking about current loss. Maybe a shop could load test the battery from the starter connections, and then from the battery terminals. This would show the current the wire(s) are using up along the way to the starter. You might need heavier gauge wire. BTW, I've seen marine batteries in the Cabelas catalog that are rated up to 1500 cca.
