Gary's question is the beginning to giving you an answer.....
If it is in the car ...the next question is "how clean do you want it"...
and "totally clean" is not an option. I have used steam Jenny
cleaners, pressure washers, air powered siphon de-greaser systems, soap and
water, putty knives...etc. Yada, yada. DIFFERENT LEVELS OF CLEAN
RESULT....BUT IT WILL NOT BE "TOTALLY" CLEAN.
If it must be "totally clean" as for "complete rebuild", then remove engine,
take it TOTALLY apart (as in all plugs, studs (if possible) and all other
things)...then do all of the above...THEN TAKE IT TO BE "SHAKED AND BAKED"
AT AN ENGINE CLEANING FACILITY . This is soaking in degreasers, etc. and
then "baking" the block with heat to finish the cleaning process...in my
county such a procedure just cost me $70.00 for a RB block. I have paid as
little as $50 and as much as $100 for this.
I believe that this is as important as buying the right size pistons
for a rebuild...especially and specifically if machine work is to be
done...boring/honing cylinders, decking,line boring/honing mains . Sorry for
the ramble...
just my humble opinion.
