It's doubtful it's being wiped off since you're dragging a flat stick thru a 
round tube.  How clean is the inside of this engine?  If it's an older 
engine and the oil return holes are plugged with gunk, the oil could be 
getting temporarily trapped up in the valve covers and/or valley.  It only 
takes a little over a quart of oil to go from full to nothing on the stick.

But that's just my opinion....I could be wrong.  ;>)
