I did that quite a few years ago. It was cheap quality house glass but it did work. I later found a nice "parts" mirror in a junkyard later and swapped back. If you take the retaining ring off (sets in a groove, right next to the mirror glass), and remove the glass, you can see how that ball setup works. There is a metal strap that goes across the ball (to provide friction) and is staked in place on each end. I've heard of people restaking that strap and it has helped with the floppy mirror syndrome. By the way, there is a spring behind the mirror glass to push it into the retaining ring and stabilize it. Be sure to put that back in or the glass itself will vibrate around.
