if they are brass particles, it'd be a thrust washer thats badly worn. if its aluminum: with old 727s, quite often, the thrust washer on the rear drum wears and the rear drum starts eating away at the main case where the drum/case clearance is tight.. If this is what you've got going on, the case, though chewed a bit, is save-able. (I know this happens on 66->later 727s, I've never taken a 62-65 727 apart, but AFIAK, they are the same in this regard).
take it to someone who knows 727s and is known not to be a crook, check with a local mopar club if you can't find one word of mouth. if it "pulls in every gear" and otherwise works okay, replacing all the seals, frictions, and fibre and brass thrush washers will, most likely, fix you up.

since you can't buy a new 727 anymore, you'd be buying a rebuilt one, which may or may not have had the old thrust washers replaced (it may have just had the seals replaced) Plus, a 62 727 is somewhat unique in that it is a cable shift tranny with a fine-spline input shaft (special torque converter required, at least, special to the 62-65s), and ball-n-trunion output shaft. finding a "new" or at least, trusted 62-64 727 might be a lot tougher than finding someone who can rebuild your old one...
