For those of use who have some dinged up trim, I removed one the
C-trim pieces from the headlight on my 64 Polara the other day to
straighten it. Never tried before. I made a couple tools from some
strips of oak I had left over from furniture I built. I made one about
quarter inch thick by 1 inch wide then ground the end down like a flad
blade screwdriver and rounded the edges slightly. I put my rubber
standing mat on top of my workbench to hammer on. I lightly tapped the
pointed end of the tool into the biggest dent in the C-trim till I had
the dent worked out. Did this with 2 dents. I used another piece of oak
to flatten out the remainder of the dents.
I then sanded the area with 400 grit paper to remove the plating and
polished it on the buffing wheel on my bench grinder. All I did was a
small area and the whole thing only took 20 minutes, but when it was
done, the dents were almost completely gone and the area shined nicely.
If I spend a little more time on this the piece will be very nice. I'm
just not sure how to keep the shine without re-anodizing it. This is the
first time I ever tried this and it really surprised me how easy it was,
so if I can do it, ANYONE can do it! Jump in and try it guys. NOS C-trim
goes $100-150 each, and I have more time than money.
