Schuyler...to check the vacuum advance,pull off the dist.cap,grab the 
breaker plate and see if it will turn in the direction of pushing the vacuum 
advance arm back into the can. If you cannot push the arm in,then I would 
say the vacuum can is frozen in the advanced position.When they freeze or 
stop working,they usually do it in the retarded or "at rest" 
position.Disconnect the vacuum advance arm from the breaker plate and make 
sure the plate moves freely...these can freeze up too.If you're running on 
the street,then you dont want to disable the vacuum advance...it helps 
performance and mileage.Twist the rotor and make sure your mechanical 
advance is not seized,or the springs are broken or absent. Again this could 
happen in the advanced position.What are you setting your initial (idle) 
timing to?
