When I worked at an antique auto restoration shop a few years ago, we took 
in an Alvis, an English car with a straight six.  There were 2 odd things 
about the motor - it used no gaskets IIRC and the camshaft came out through 
the backside of the motor.  As I was told by the owner, the gasket surfaces 
on the motor were machined to such close tolerances that no gaskets were 
needed.  Always thought that was odd.
