here's a link to a good write up:

there a lot of HVLP vendors. you can even buy a cheapo HVLP @ Harbor
Freight, The Home Depot, or on ebay. like anything you get what you
pay for.... of course, as a hobbiest, its probably premature to dive
into a highend Sata gun.

HVLP will put more paint on your parts and pieces, by far, compared to
a conventional spray gun. That money can add up when you consider
inexpensive single stage auto paint, like Omni, can run ya $45-65/quart
once you add in reducer, hardener, & cleanup...

the problem with HVLP (and if you have a honker compressor, its not
a problem,,,) is that most HVLP guns have a massive SCFM (or CFM)
rating that suck down a compressor. true, the PSI requirement is low,
but sometimes these guns need 13-15 SCFM @ 30psi, or at 40 psi. I've
seen some that have a 10CFM requirement. There are also some
conventional spray guns made by Sharpe and Devilbiss that are "near
HVLP" standards, but exceed 15 psi @ the nozzle so they can't be labeled
HVLP. they have ow-overspray characteristics, like HVLP, but
have lower CFM requirements, like 8-9CFM @ 30 PSI.

AFAIK, turbine HVLPs are great for woodworking but don't seem to be
popular in the auto paint world. I think I've read, or spoken with
sales reps that have explained that turbine HVLP produces too hot of an
compressed air for auto paint. I dunno... can any paint experts
expand? or call BS?
