I read where high test gasoline was 106 octane in the 60’s. That was needed for some of the 13 to 1 compression ratio engines. When I rebuilt my 1962 413 max wedge Dodge engine and bored it out to 426 I lowered the compression ratio to 10 to 1 to allow the use of the more current 93 Octane pump gas. It would still diesel at shut off and I would shut it off with the torqueflight in drive to prevent that. After bending a push rod I since add 2 gallons of VP 110 Octane to a tank and that seems to have limited any dieseling. So far it works.
