RE: Fw: Ammeter bypass ?

Doug,

You can avoid the bulkhad connector as the weak spot by disconnecting the pins for the ammeter circuit and then drilling right through the connector to run a 10 gauge wire straight through it, as suggested in the bypass directions.

Thank you,

Jim

Thanks Gary,  I have made the change to the newer style alternator and regulator, but did not go to a high amp alternator.  From what I have read, the bulkhead connection seems to be the bigger issue.

Hi all,

I'm posting the email  below for Doug, as it got misdirected.

My answer: Yes this was discussed. Some mention was made of the MAD electrical upgrade  to bypass the factory ammeter. (www.madelectrical.com) and also on using a volt meter.

But also, one thought was that if you have a stock electrical system it is okay not to bypass the ammeter; but super important to make certain the bulkhead connector is very clean and not corroded and all connections are tight. It was also said that in Taxis and Police Cars with higher current requirements  the ammeter wiring went through the firewall via a distinct grommeted hole, not via the bulkhead connector.  If you are adding in more circuit load do so directly from the battery circuit with appropriate  fuses or breakers. Don't overload the ammeter circuit with these.

Others may recall more of the discussions.

Thanks,
Gary H.
