Re: Not cranking ...

What was the voltage after you charged it? 12.5 should have been enough to crank. Seriously doubt your alternator is to blame. Wiggle stuff until it breaks again, and check your grounds. The dying when you put it into gear could be indicative of a grounding issue.

So I think I have two things going on.  My battery was 12.49 and wouldn't crank at all.  So I charged it and it fired right up.  So maybe alternator.  I'll check that.

But when I shifted out of Park, the engine shut off.  Would that be the symptom of a bad neutral safety switch?

Thanks.  I'll check but the battery cables are pretty new.  But maybe a little loose.

Check your battery cable to the posts. Mine didn't start at gas station the day before going to Carlisle, I tightened the D clamp and it started, when I got home I changed the 60 year old original negative cable, as it was fraying and the cover was cracking, I had new ones just waiting to go on. Positive still looks good, but that one will be this winter. John Wask.....

My 63 Polara was driving great all of the long weekend.  Parked it then went to start it and got a slight click then nothing.  Measured the battery voltage and it's 12.49.  Is that enough or border line?  I'll try charging it later.  Maybe bad alternator?  If I charge it and it starts, I'll check the voltage again.

Thought it might be neutral safety switch so I shifted out of park and stayed in neutral.  Still nothing.

Tried a different and new ballast resistor and nothing.

Lights come on but maybe that's irrelevant.

Any thoughts?  Thanks.
