You may have been using a champion heat range 4.  Use a Cgsmpion Racing Plug, heat range 8.

Back in the day I ran Champion plugs in my my 2 stroke dirt bike and had constant fouling problems. Always had to carry a spare. Switched to NGK and never had a problem after that.  I've been an NGK user ever since. Including in my 440.

If I remember they were only 2" high, not much different and they cleared with no problem. My hood had the factory modification where the cross bracing was cut away for air cleaner clearance.I went to my local speed shop and with the base diameter and the lowest profile which was 1 3/4" or 2" they were perfect. The top is called the K&N X-Stream top, all can be purchased seperatly.
