The number of max wedge cars of each year Dodges and Plymouths are exactly known and listed in retired Chrysler exec Darrell Davis’s series of books by their actual VIN’s based 100% on factory records rather than old magazine guesses, old racer’s tales, and the old (but sometimes true) saw that Mopar made some odd combos when requested. Now I’m not looking down on “old” having turned 70 this week but still…I always wonder why magazine writers don’t just check the definitive source. 

I opened my book, “The Complete Guide to the 1962 Plymouth Super Stock Package”, and found that 298 Plymouth Super stock Package (maximum performance package or “max wedge”) Plymouths were built by the factory for the 1962 model year. Every one of them is listed by its Vehicle Identification Number and is in a chart showing exactly how it was equipped. The summary goes on to say that 159 were built with the T-85 manual trans, more than half!  And, 26 of the total were equipped with the 13.5:1 engine, all in June and July. There were no ‘62 Plymouth wagons built as max wedges but all of the other possible types are represented. 

I spoke with Mr Davis several years ago and one thing I asked was about 413’s with inline dual quads, as I was trying to help a list member determine what combination his car was made with. Mr Davis’s answer for that was that there were zero such cars made at the factory but it was a dealer installed option in the later part of the model year due to customer demand. Such low numbers like 1 of 50 could mean the writer consulted a list of “currently known” cars in a registry like that maintained by Mr. Govier.
