Both were flat tappets, and both were very, very good. The "R" designation indicates you were using a roller. The 72 was probably a smaller one. I still use a R-104, which has an advertised lift of .660, but works out to a true lift of around .707. It has worked great for over twenty years. We run Nostalgia SS, and the new technology dictates that we build the motors to operate at a much lower engine speed than in the old days. You don't build the motors to run 7500 rpm any more, technology has advanced to make the engines run around 6500-6700. This is easier on everything, and as a result camshaft design has changed drastically. I am having Racer do a cam for me currently with a bit lower lift and duration, but ground on a centerline that will bring the rpm range to the desired level. As a result, we can take gear out of the car, and run just as quick.
